Merry Christmas to the 6/7-L Community

Image
I wanted to take this opportunity to wish each student and their families a very Merry Christmas.  It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know your children.  They are a wonderful bunch of kids and you should be very proud of each of them, as I am.  I enjoy going into work each and everyday, always looking forward to exploring new topics and having interesting and lively class discussions with the students.  I look forward to this continuing in the New Year. From my family to yours, please enjoy a relaxing, enjoyable and safe Christmas break with family.

Christmas Time at MTPS!

It has certainly been a couple of busy weeks at MTPS leading up to the Christmas break.  Last week's events included a daily school-wide sing-a-long, the annual turkey dinner and our own classroom celebrations.

6/7-Lers Show Their STEM Skills

Image
Many future job opportunities will be STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related.  Students in 6/7-L were introduced to this field through a Christmas ornament project.  Students used wood, measuring tapes, snips and glue guns to construct the triangular ornaments with specific angle measurements.  This work with angles will provide a head-start for our geometry focus in the new year.  The student were also required to complete a safety package which discussed the importance of wearing eye protection, and exercising caution when using construction tools.

Another Busy Week!

As we countdown towards Christmas, there are activities and theme days throughout the week.  Check out the calendar below.

We Sounded Like a Heavenly Choir

Students in class 6/7-L combined with Ms. Burr's 3/4 class to perform a Christmas parody in front of the school, as well as for the parent community at a well-attended daytime concert last Thursday. Here's a quick taste of 'Twelve Pinecones in a Pine Tree.'

Sound Academy Entertains at CHS

Sound Academy is a propular music program run by Jamie Sharpe, a teacher at CHS.  Each year  elementary schools in the area are invited to CHS for a Christmas concert, which students in 6/7-L attended last Wednesday.  Here's a quick look at what the studens saw.

Integers and Finances

We have just finished up our work with integers, which afforded lots of opportunities for hands-on learning activities.  We are now turning our attention to financial literacy.  This is a relatively new topic area in the Ontario curriculum.  We will be examing topics such as setting financial goals, way to pay, and accumulating and borrowing money.

The Importance of Staying Active

Image
Whether in the gym, classroom or outside at recess, the students in 6/7-L are generally a very active bunch.  And that's a good thing.  Brain research shows that a body break increases blood flow to the brain, which in turns helps children focus, and stay alert.  I also use classroom body breaks as a method of transitioning from one activity to the next; I find body breaks are effective at helping the students shift focus to the new activity.

6/7-Lers are Stars

Image
Students in 6/7-L had the opportunity last week, to partcipate in an arts and crafts activity organized by students in 7/8-F, who provided the materials and instructions.  The 6/7s used solder metal and beads to make (or attempt to) a star ornament.

A Terrific Kid!

Image
Congratulations to Mackenzie who was presented with the 6/7-L Terrfic Kid Award for the month of November at an assembly last Wednesday.  The theme of the award was organization.  Mackenzie always organizes her work in a neat, clear and step-by-step manner, making it easy to follow her thinking.
