The grade 6s continue their examination of flight, which includes taking a look at the four forces required for flight. We're also looking at how lift is achieved in things like hot air balloons, blimps, kites and animals. The grade 7s are examining various types of structures and the forces, internal and external, that could affect the stability of a structure. Both grades participated in an activity where they were to build a pyramid or other structure using playing cards. It was a lot harder than I thought!
A Mishmash of Math

We've had a variety of math focuses over the last couple of weeks including integers, fractions and algebra. We are about to turn our attention to geometry. Parents, if you are looking to do some home practice with your child, it never hurts to review and repeat the basic times tables. This can be done with flashcards, timed worksheets (which I'd be happy to provide) or even computer-based activities. Students who are comfortable with the times tables usually have an easier time picking-up things like fractions, decimals, percents, division, algebra etc.

We are shortly going to be turning our attention to geometry, including the measuring and drawing of angles. We don't have a lot of spare protractors in the classroom. I know several students have protractors with their math sets. If your son or daughter does not have a protractor at school, perhaps you could send one in with them. I know that they can be purchased up at the Dollar Store. Thank you very kindly for this.

Our discussions and learning began with Martin Luther King Jr. We've since been learning about the accomplishments of well-known black Canadians including Hal Johnson and Jerome Iginla. Hal Johnson, along with his wife Joanne Mcleod, hosted a 90-second TV segment called 'Body Break' during the late 80's and 90s. We learned that Hal dealt with some shocking descrimination and racism at the beginning of his TV career. Jerome Iginla is a retired professional hockey player who laced up for a variety of teams, including the Calgary Flames. He has received numerous awards and is always willing to give back to the community. Our learning and exploration of Black History Month continues next month.

Student in 6/7-L will be heading to the arena this Thursday, February 29th. We are set to arrive at the rink at 11:45, with blades hitting the ice at 12:00 for a 45 minute skate. We expect to be back at the school shortly after 1:00. Several parents have graciously offered to volunteer on the trip. We really appreciate it; trips like this would not be possible without your help. We will meet you at the arena at 11:45. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Upper Canada Stone Company , our generous sponsor for the event, and to Mr. Harvey who organizes our skating trips each year. We have a second trip to the rink set for March 5th. Following Board policy, students who are in grade 6 and under are required to wear helmets when they skate. Helmets are optional for Grade 7 and 8 students who have skating experience. If any students require skates or helmets, they should let me know ASAP as we have access to equipment courtesy of t...

Peyton consistently demonstrates responsibility both in academics and in terms of her roles within the classroom and the school. Her hard work and dedication to learning helps to foster a positive atmosphere in the classroom. She demonstrates leadership within small groups, follows instructions well and completes work within the expected timeframe. She is also an active participant in all classroom activities as well as school extracurricular activities such as sports teams. This student’s commitment to responsibility will serve her very well as she continues with her education. Congratulations to Peyton! Morgan and Tenley from 6/7-L were part of the team who MC-ed the Terrific Kids assembly
